Abstract

We will explain why we work from the frankness and commitment in Augusta Emerita roman houses. Thus, from the V National Archaeological Congress celebrated in 1957, Professor Balil warned of the low value that the problems of private architecture of Spanish Rome had for historiography to date. The same author explained at the celebration of the two-thousand th anniversary of the city that very few roman cities allowed studying at some length the evolution of domestic architecture in the coordinates of time and space, being Mérida one of the greatest exponents, within and outside the panorama of the Iberian Peninsula. In fact, although there was an abundant archaeological literature of some aspects of the decoration and morphology, domestic architecture still being an open research line since there hadn't been, until date, a global vision that integrates the study of its architecture, ornamental program, material culture and its integration into the urban scene-explanatory factors of great interest nowadays- under the development in Hispania of the domestic architecture in the last decades. Thus, it was necessary to generate a theoretical framework through which the domestic building industry of Emerita was understood as an overall reflection, which, with the help of new archaeological evidences, could produce a renewed interpretative approach.
