Resumen

Mitochondria play a central role in the homeostasis of higher eukaryotic cells. Among other activities they participate in the provision of metabolic energy by oxidative phosphorylation, the execution of cell death and intracellular signaling by Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mitochondrial impairment is involved in a large number of human pathologies which include cancer. Cancer cells in the presence of oxygen have an enhanced glycolytic phenotype. This observation led Otto Warburg to suggest in the early days of the previous century that the bioenergetic activity of mitochondria must be impaired in the cancer cell. However, Warburg's hypothesis was largely neglected until recently when the abnormal energetic metabolism of the cancer cells has emerged with renewed clinical and biotechnological interest. In this PhD. Thesis we have addressed the role that mitochondria play in cancer biology.
