Abstract

The thesis aims at an archaeological approach to the collection of pavings coming from the Roman city of Italica. The main body of the proje ct comprises an archaeological catalogue where more than 130 pavings are revised according to AIEMA's standards. This studie includes the analysis of the history of the archaeological discoveries, a process which has been long and complex, since it has taken place in the course of two centuries. That is why the related bibliographic and archivistic sources have been carefully revisited, with the finding of inedit documentation which is presented here. In five chapters, the meaning of the mosaic s as a part of the domestic space creation has been also revised, both as a material reality or as a way to transmit messages. The production and manufacture of mosaic in Itálica and the geometric composition of designs analysis is also analised.
