Abstract

The changes taking place in the family, in conjunction with a wider process of social transformation, have created the conditions for the relatively little-known phenomenon of an ongoing increase in violent behaviour. We have studied this phenomenon in the setting of a protection centre with a view to determining the factors influencing the emergence and maintenance of violent behaviours by minors and the extent to which the professionals who work with these minors mitigate or reinforce these behaviours. To this end we have used the qualitative technique of participant observation, as recorded in our field notes on our day-to-day experiences in the centre, thanks to which we have been able to establish that the violent behaviour of minors towards the educators is, in part, perpetuated by the educators’ reinforcement of the behaviours of the minors. In total, the study was been carried out on a total or twelve educators and six protected minors.
