Abstract

The aims of this study were: to know and analyze in terms of age in Extremadura (Spain); i) the use of free time; ii) level of physical and sports activities; iii) the reasons for dropping and non sport practice; iv) opinion about sports facilities; v) family and sport activities in family; vi) sports associations; vii) opinion, knowledge and participation in institutional sport programs; viii) opinion about physical education; ix) opinion about institutions and sports. We conducted a population-based, cross-sectional survey (according size of residence town, sex and age). Sample was 1111 people over 18 year resident in Extremadura (Spain). Frequency, percentage and Chi square were calculated. Main conclusions are: i) people has high interest in sports but low practice level (especially older). People walk more than Spanish average (peak in 65-74 years), who plays sports do because of fun or exercise; ii) Those who do not practice sport is because of lack of time or because they dislike; iii) levels of sports associations and sport licenses are very low, being lower as age increases; iv) They does not know sports programs in the region, ( knowledge decrease as age increases); v) they consider that sport promotion is very important important but administration do not care about.
