Abstract

During the Great Recession, the temporary employment rate decreased significantly. After four years of recovery, it has grown again without reaching pre-crisis levels. In this document, we show that this evolution has not brought about a real improvement in job insecurity in the Spanish labor market. The unstoppable increase in the number of contracts that accompany the current expansive phase is characterized by an increasingly extensive use of temporary contracts of very short duration and of rehiring. This phenomenon is not fully captured by indicators such as the temporary employment rate, hiding part of the job precariousness. In this article we document this phenomenon, how it affects access to permanent employment and its relation to spending on unemployment benefit.
