This Doctora Thesis constitutes and approach to the problema of "Romanisation' from the perspective of settlemente patterns base don Geographical Information Systems. From a theoretical point of view, a full critical discussion of the concept of 'Romanisation' is, followed by a discussion of the significance that in the study of this issue have approaches based on 'GIS-based spatial analysis' and 'landscape archaeology'. From an empirical viewpoint this study focuses on the Roman province of Baetica (Spain), and more especifically on the regions of Western Sierra Morena (Huelva and Seville) and Lands of Antequera (Málaga). From a methodological viewpoint, this research departs from a comprehensive catalogue of sites materialised in the ARCA database, created as part of this protect, to the carry out a complete statistical-spatial analysis of the database, with intensive use of significance testing.
