Abstract

In the last few years, the planning of the development of the tourist activity at an international level has been marked by the search of diversified, high-quality and sustainable (from an environmental, economic and social point of view) tourist models. The performances developed in this new context have been directed to the configuration of more competitive tourist destinations in an international context characterised by a greater competition between destinations. The sustainability of the tourist activity constitutes a key issue in the attainment of this objective. In this new framework, for the management of the tourist destinations the existence of sustainability indicators systems it becomes necessary. These systems can allow evaluating the situation of each destination. These systems permit to define the necessary performances taking as it bases the diagnosis which the indicators offer. In this context, the present work shows different indicators systems to evaluate the sustainability of the Spanish coastal destinations, according to the World Tourism Organization´s guidelines. In order to facilitate the use of the information contained in this system by the agents implied in the planning of the sector, alternative synthetic indicators are constructed to simplify the measurement of a complex phenomenon as the sustainability of the tourist activity. The construction of these synthetic measures is made by using three aggregation techniques: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and the distance indicator DP2.
