Abstract

The paper explores nineteenth-century travel narratives by British and American women writers in their visits to Spain, and the way they re-present the image of the country. Most of these works remain unexplored as opposed to the widely studied and translated texts by their male peers. However, their alternative views of the social and cultural realities of Spain serve to contrast and question stereotypical approaches, such as the "Spain is different" cliché, of various male romantic travellers, and, at the same time, rewrite the relationship between concepts such as genre and gender in nineteenth-century societies. The theoretical frame used to examine the narratives combines gender studies and postcolonial theory.
