Abstract

Ruolz Silver is a methodology based on an electrolyte system that is applyed over carved metal pieces, in order to obtain a silver layer by electro-deposition similar in appearance to the original sterling silver. This technology was patented by Henri de Ruolz in 1838, and acquired by Francesc Isaura for Spain in 1848. These pieces changed the silver industry due to lower costs, and it use was spreaded among the bourgeoisie for daily pieces and also for religious artifacts. The aim of this research was the application of laser spectroscopy to the study of a Ruolz piece from 19th century in order to assess their analytical capability versus conventional characterization techniques such as optical or electronic microscopies. This methodology allows analyze metal pieces without sampling neither preparation.
