MILES and SNOW'S generic strategies have had great effect in the strategic literature (MILES & SNOW, 1978). Several studies have used the factor analysis model of DESS and DAVIS (1984), peaked by ROBINSON and PEARCE (1988), using 22 competitive factors to explain and compare different generic strategies. However, among those studies MILES and SNOW'S generic strategies is not found. A first phase of this study consists of a panel of experts who asses the MILES and SNOW'S generic strategies. Furthermore, we compare the answers of this panel with the opinion of 54 large Spanish firms to analyze the descriptive power of these generic strategies. The article distinguishes specific factors of each generic strategy from the panel of experts and from the firm's point of view. We point out a different perception between the firms and the panel of experts, which indicates a low level of descriptive power of MILES and SNOW'S generic strategies
