Abstract

This article claims to explore the paths followed by reason in order to trace its development since its discovery. The first concepts of reason developed into various forms of rationalization which later branched into two: substantive and instrumental reason. The nature of the rationalization that was the fruit of this bifocal process caused a deep reconsideration of the nature of progress. We present a review of the confusion between substantive and instrumental rationality in order to identify the nature of the manipulations leading to the current situation and to seek alternatives to the penitentiary rationalization of the modern age. We thus turn to several alternative and sustainable paths which enable us to reconcile excessive rationalization with the space necessary for the development of the human wish
