Abstract
Neither radicalism nor fundamentalism can be understood as manifestations inherent to Islam, but rather as the ultimate outcome of a cultural process rooted in 20th century Western totalitarianism. In this paper I analyse the philosophical substratum on which the Western totalitarian systems of the 20th century were based in order to show their links with contemporary Islamic radical trends.
