Resumo

The European dimension of Education is based on the respect to the different cultures and languages of the European citizens. In this framework, second language acquisition at all educational levels is a clear objective reflected in several EU policies. Academic mobility programmes within the Socrates scheme (since 1995) offer students an opportunity to learn foreign languages and getting to know cultures, by enjoying a stay in a European country and having granted recognition of the modules and activities carried out in the foreign university. In this paper, we review the existing literature on linguistic competence and academic mobility. The international Project Temcu (Teacher Training for the Multicultural Classroom at University), is also presented. This project's objective is to analyse exchange students academic experiences in Higher Education contexts, in order to better approach the impact of mobility on teaching and learning.
