Abstract
Labels as Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) have been traditionally being used as differentiation mechanisms of quality for food products. Their meaning is similar to that of other labels used in non-food product categories to link product quality to country or region of origin. However, besides the demonstrated results achieved by those labels in many cases, the profusion of designations arisen during the last years, lead us to explore about their real contribution to the Spanish food industry, on a regional, national and international dimension
