Abstract
The taxonomic status of Carex helodes Link is defined on the basis of karyological, macromorphological, micromorphological, and chorological data. A comparative study of the closely- related species C. binervis Sm., C. camposii Boiss. & Reuter and C. laevigata Sm. was also performed. Results indicate that C. helodes is a well-defined species which may be included within Section Spirostachyae (Drejer) Bailey, and that C. intacta Samp. (lectotypified here) is a synonym of Link's plant. The species treated are considered as part of a natural group, for which a phylogenetic scheme and a key are presented here. In addition, nomenclatural and biogeographic aspects of Link's plant are discussed.
