Abstract

This paper presents several simple and inexpensive teaching tools to analyse the fundamentals and implications of the ductile deformation processes affecting rocks. These tools include the implementation of a shear box to study the bi-dimensional tòpics of deformation, and several runs are suggested to highlight some apparently hidden or complex points on this topic. In parallel, the use of plasticine is also explained to illustrate the three-dimensional intricacies of the deformation ellipsoids. It is strongly advisable to support these activities with visits to selected field cases, particularly ductile shear zones. The Southern Iberian shear zone (Variscan Iberian massif) has beenused as an example in this piece of work. The techniques explained are felt to be highly appropriate for students in the last few years of secondary education, although they could also be suitable for firstyear university students.
