Abstract
As it is well known, all changes are usual in post industrial societies. With them, new models of convivencial are formed and incorporated, and are different ways of living appear, which make the communities change and grow increasingly in every aspect, propelled by medical and technological advances. Its an unusual fact: for the first time in History, the elderly are becoming the biggest population group in many countries actually. Because of this, new needs, possibilities and problems arise, all of them related to this group, who have traditionally been accepted considering they were a minority and seen as of little productivity in our current economical model. The article will focus in the process of active aging, in how it is possible, thanks to socioeducation and gerontagogy, a new discipline offering a wide range of possibilities from a questioning, reflexive, socially changing and mutually enriching point of view. It is necessary to know first the role that the elderly play in our society, the myths and stereotypes around them and who form this heterogeneous group. After this, some shades and suggestions will be added about how to improve the educational process and trough this, achieve a transformation in the group properly speaking in the individuals in it, in the society where they belong, and all this, bearing in mind that not all the elderly are the same; neither is their position in the process of aging nor their context and environment.
