Abstract

This article explains the relationship between citizen mobilization and collective demand. We have taken as an exemplary case Argentine protest cycle (1998-2005). The methodological approach was performed using Protest Event Analysis". The study conducted involved 3209 protests during this period. First we describe the dynamics of the protest cycle. Then we propose a collective-clamor typology that combines: a) the collective good demanded b) the position from which the collective subject makes such claim. Finally, we show that the constitution of collective demands is a factor that facilitates (or inhibits): a) the use of non-formal channels--the extension of the protestand b) the preference for more or less disruptive formsthe intensity of the protest.
