Abstract

During the last few years it has become clear that students struggle to understand the explanations given by the lecturers in formal or quasi-formal language in the quantitative subjects of the first year of the Business Degrees of Pablo de Olavide University. Such situation has led Mathematics for Business programme coordinators to implement some changes in the teaching methodology, aiming at achieving a better control of students’ mathematical language. The first step we took had to do with the students’ real competence in the aforementioned language. In order to know this, students were asked to complete two online tests. Our second step tried to motivate participants to improve their skills in this special language, particularly useful for science, technology and business. Finally, there is an indication on how the control of mathematical language directly influences the score obtained by students, what allows us to infer the importance of the correct use of language in the Mathematics class, in particular in the case of Mathematics for Business.
