Abstract

From the case study in El Castillo (Río San Juan-Nicaragua) we discuss on the apparent paradox of the effect of geographic isolation as an obstacle for the development of a mass tourism model and, conversely, favoring a local based tourism. Most connecting the region with the implementation of communication infrastructure is beginning to break its relative isolation and already have some effects on the tourist arrivals, their characteristics and improved logistical conditions that have so far hindered the penetration of agents and external operators. Our study aims to determine the actual conditions and perceptions of local actors about the isolation and social and environmental effects of opening to the outside of the region and how they can influence the maintenance of the current model of local based tourism.
