Abstract
Background: Since we did not know the specific pollutant factors related to Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS), we decided to see the possible relationship between the incidence of MDS and the pollutants collected in the monthly Air Quality Reports in Andalusia. Methods: The study was carried out between 2009 and 2013 in the Virgen Macarena University Hospital area of Seville, n = 173 cases, which were later crossed with the emission of atmospheric pollutants contributed by the monthly Air Quality Reports of Andalusia. Results: We located a possible source of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission and performed a comparison with patients diagnosed with MDS. The results showed a statistically significant relationship (p-value = 0.007618). Conclusions : The incidences of SMD and emissions of pollutants appear to follow a pattern that could be interpreted as similar.
