Abstract

Despite the current economic recovery, half of the unemployed are long-term, 40% of whom are over 45 years old. In this paper we present estimates of the determinants of transitions between unemployment and employment in this group. They indicate that four out of ten unemployed people continue in that state 12 months later and only one fifth of them find employment in the second year and that age acts as a substantial barrier to reemployment. However, there are large differences in the risk of long-term unemployment depending on individual characteristics and each person’s employment history prior to the crisis.
