Abstract

The global digital revolution, along with the demands of the current multilingual society, sketch out a scenario full of challenges for the sake of training competent citizens. From different disciplines’ perspectives, such as Translation Studies, it has been researched into multilingualism, second language acquisition and digital skills throughout decades, though there are significant literature and evidence on the translation competence, which incorporates not only the capacity of communicating in several languages, but also instrumental (technological) subcompetences. This study aims at describing the needs, tools and resources used by the students of Translation and Interpreting included in the sample. In order to attain our goal, a survey has been carried out involving 110 students (local and incoming students from the Universidad Pablo de Olavide mainly, and students from the Bristol and Ulster universities as well), and its results have been compared with those of a similar survey made by Alonso among 412 professional translators in 2015. In both surveys, it could be observed the importance of lexicographic, terminological and documentary needs experienced by the subjects. Unlike professional translators, translation students found the use of mobile devices very compelling. Exhibiting a sort of a constructivist dynamics in their learning process, students usually turned to their classmates as well as to their lecturers for support and guidance. This is a worth researching tendency which can be studied more thoroughly in future projects. Automatic translation is seldom used among students and professionals. Results suggest that individuals seem to cover up their multilingual competence gaps with (technological or human) external resources.
