Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue describir los cambios en la composición corporal, la fuerza y el rendimiento de sprint en respuesta a toda una temporada competitiva de entrenamiento de fútbol complementada con 2 sesiones a la semana de entrenamiento con sobrecarga excéntrica inercial en jóvenes futbolistas profesionales masculinos. Se evaluó la composición regional y de cuerpo entero (evaluada mediante absorciometría de rayos X de doble energía), la potencia de salida en sentadilla media y el rendimiento de sprint de 40 m en catorce jugadores. El entrenamiento con sobrecarga excéntrica consistió en sesiones de entrenamiento de 1 a 2 series de 10 ejercicios de core y tren superior (Día 1) y tren inferior (Día 2), a la semana durante toda la temporada de competición (27 semanas). La masa grasa corporal total disminuyó (-6,3 ± 3,6%, ES = -0,99 ± 0,54) sustancialmente mientras que la masa magra aumentó (2,5 ± 0,8%, ES = 0,25 ± 0,09), con algunas diferencias regionales. Hubo un aumento sustancial en la potencia de salida de sentadilla media (del 3% al 14%, ES de 0,45 a 1,73) y en el rendimiento del sprint (de 1,1% a 1,8%, ES de -0,33 a -0,44), sin embargo, los cambios en el rendimiento no se correlacionaron con cambios en la composición corporal. Un programa combinado de entrenamiento de fútbol y de sobrecarga excéntrica fue capaz de promover cambios positivos en la composición corporal y los factores físicos relevantes tanto para el rendimiento en el campo como para la prevención de lesiones en futbolistas de élite.
