Abstract

Analogue experiments of thrust wedge involving variation of décollement material have been realized. A plate of viscous material (silicone) was placed in the central part of the model, at the base of a sandpack. Experimental results show that a strong link exists between the final geometry of the thrust wedge and the presence and geometry of the viscous substrate. Indeed, viscous material enhanced the development of major backthrusts and the outward migration of the deformation front. Consequently, wide synclines formed, favouring the presence of piggy-back basins. These results compare well with the structural style of natural examples belonging to the External Zone of the Betics.
