Abstract

This Doctoral Thesis collects the experimental works carried out to compare two phylogenet ically related species of circum-Mediterranean firs, Abies pinsapo and Abies alba, in terms of their ecophysiological behaviour , always considering possible differential selective pressures suffered by the first, given its location in a typical Mediterranean environment. Thus , in the first part, it describes the experiments carried out under controlled conditions to contribute to the ecophysiologica l profile of both species , and to elucidate whether the differences between them may be related to the evolutionary and ecological context in which they are found. The second block comprises the fieldwork carried out using a spatially explicit approach , to assess the behaviour of A. pinsapo juvenile individuals located in different microenvironments within the forest , in arder to determine which features or strategies enable them to survive the harshness of Mediterranean climatic conditions , and which the best microclimate conditions are for such vulnerable individuals.
