Résumé
The Diccionario de términos médicos (Real Academia acional de Medicina, 2011; henceforth DTM) is the first lexicographic work on Spanish medical language with a normative orientation, which manifests itself in the selection of certain headwords as preferred in the case of synonyms, the inclusion of rejected and misadvised forms, and the suggestion of terms coined in Spanish to substitute many of the foreign words (particularly, English terms) included in the dictionary. This paper aims to classify rejected and disadvised forms in the DTM. We also analyse the frequency of use of the terms recommended by the dictionary in present-day Spanish medical language. The results show that the DTM combines the normative function with a clearly terminological orientation, in such a way that frequency of use of the terms receives the same consideration as the academic criterion.
