Abstract

This work focuses on the professional status of teachers in Portugal and concentrates on the analysis of the latest transitions and their impact on teachers, namely the Teachers Status Career review process and the approach to the economic and financial crisis. The time range is between the years 2007 and 2015. This study was developed with teachers of the Portuguese Public Education System and aims to find out and understand the impacts that these changes produced in the teaching identity, through a qualitative research strategy. Evidences suggest that teachers, protagonists of this study, show strong indications of dissatisfaction and disappointment, mainly because of budget cuts and measures that disfigured teachers role and work, making it unstable and introducing control mechanisms which have reflected in a general decrease of the quality of their intervention.
