Abstract

The lowland ponds and pools of Andalusia are spatially linked both to the subbetic materials of the Betic Cordillera and to the materials of the Olistostromic Complex of the Guadalquivir river basin. They are usually found forming clusters of several ponds, usually smaller than 20 hectares in extension. Each system can display particular hydrogeological characteristics, but it has been possible to develop a hydrological conceptual model for the majority of the studied ponds. The model is in accordance to the hydrogeological, morphological and hydrochemical observations that have been carried out. Based on this conceptual model, water balances have been made in the 31 main ponds of the Andalusian Countryside. On the other hand a hydrological state index based on morphometric (average flooded surface and basin extension) and climatic (effective rain) criteria has been developed. This index has allowed us to know the hydrological functioning of these ponds and pools and their hydrological state. Finally, the application of this methodology will allow implementing management and/or restoration planning based on hydrological knowledge in the ponds studied.
