Abstract

The Ensenada of Marbella has experienced in the past decades significant physical and socio-economic changes mainly due to a deep transformation in the economic model and a strong development of the tourism industries. Associated land use change has induced evident transformations on the coastline. However it is in the nearshore that severe alterations need to be investigated via wave propagation simulations performed on 1889's and contemporary bathymetries to reveal important changes in wave energy dissipation patterns and in the overall functioning of the Bay through the development of complex littoral cells. The analysis of nearshore processes and volumetric analyses by the comparison of time lapsed bathymetries show how these changes in the seafloor, occurred at a century scale, could be linked with the shoreline evolution in the long-term, and thus explain in part the erosion and accretion patterns detected in the Ensenada.
