Abstract

The Headland Bay of Marbella, in the Western Costa del Sol, in the Province of Málaga, represents a very active socio-economic zone subjected to significant changes in land use. The main river basins of this coastal zone have been severely affected and the main mechanisms for sediment supply that feed the littoral system altered. Severe erosion processes are evident in most beaches. In this paper, a characterisation of the hydrographic network of the study area and a quantitative estimation of the sediment yield from the main basins are presented. Modelling is implemented to calculate soil loss from hillsides and then applied at basin scale in order to provide more accurate diagnosis for the implementation of policies at various scales incorporating natural dynamics on Integrated Coastal Zone Management instruments that could also be applied in other coastal environments.
