Zusammenfassung
The study of neural processes underlying the states of alertness and sleep represents one of the scientific frontiers posed to the Neuroscience of nowadays. The understanding of such neuronal mechanisms requires a comparative and multidisciplinary approach. This text presents a perspective of present knowledge on the organizing principles governing the relationships between a living organism and its environment, on which are the molecular mechanisms generating circadian rhythms and, finally, on the neuronal processes taking charge of the alternation between the different mental states.
