Abstract

The aim of this research was to know psychological variables (motivation, basic psychological needs, and physical selfconcept) that predicted the intention of being physically active in 10-12 years old students, due to it is a crucial age to set up some habits that will help them to the acquisition of healthier life styles in the future. The theoretical framework in what the study was supported was Self-Determination Theory. The sample was comprised of 362 students (M: 10, 87; SD: .71). Four scales were used: the Scale of Perceived Locus of Causality in Physical Education (PLOC), the Basic Psychological Needs Scale (BPNES), the Physical Self-concept Questionnaire (PSQ) and the Questionnaire to Measure the Intention of being Physically Active (MIFA). The results showed that the predictors of the intention of being physically active were intrinsic motivation and physical fitness and appearance, among the factors of self-concept.
