Resumo

The aim of this paper is to analyze the reasons that lead Spanish firms to cooperate with the research institutes of the Spanish National Council of Scientific Research (CSIC). At the same time, we study the variety of mechanisms through which the knowledge transfer process among the agents mentioned occurs. Basically, we try to determine the role that Spanish firms attribute to the CSIC research institutes. To this end, the empirical work is based on a face-to-face survey designed for this purpose and that was addressed to a representative sample of firms that have collaborated with the public institution. Exactly, a sample of 785 firms has been analyzed. The results suggest that firms cooperate with research institutes of the CSIC because of the valuable resources and capacities that this public institution has and which are relevant for developing innovations and maintaining the competitiveness. Moreover, the analysis highlight the diversity of cooperation patterns, mainly based on technology support and consultancy, R&D contracts and the use of research facilities such as more frequent channels for interaction.
