Abstract

In Sufism visionary experience (ru’ya) is one of the main methods to obtain deep knowledge of reality (ḥaqīqa). The veridical vision (ru’yaṣādiqa) and awakened vision (ru’ya fīl yaqẓa) are the main access routes to the imaginal world (‘ālam al-mithāl) and to the vital hermeneutics that emerges from these experiences. This paper gathers and analyzes from a philosophical perspective the experiences of the main figure of the ṭarīqa Tijāniyya, Aḥmad Tijāni, and comparing it with Muḥyi aldīn Ibn‘Arabī’s approaches and experiences to visionary experience.
