Abstract
During a journey to Lebanon, the writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942) could assist to an Islamic feast in Beirut. She tells about this experience in a chapter of the book “Winter in Vorderasien: Tagebuch einer Reise” (1934). This article analyses the narrative and discursive procedures by which the Swiss traveller describes the popular festivity. It is based on the conception of Orientalism (Said 1979) and on two theorists who have studied the orientalist discourses in Schwarzenbach's work (Opitz 2008, Decock 2011). My essay shows that Schwarzenbach, on one hand, adopts a historiographical and antimodernist perspective based on predetermined images. On the other hand, she uses the oriental tropes of gender transgression and cultural synthesis.
