Resum

Introduction: In Mauritania the tobacco epidemic, with increasing prevalence particularly among young people, is a public health problem. Assess its prevalence, attitudes and practices among workers in clinics Nouakchott and analyze their differences by gender and professional and know their association to family or occupational exposure (passive smoking) are priority objectives. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted on a representative sample of 396 workers at random from among the 1702 members of the health clinics registered in Nouakchott Medicine National Labour Office (ONMT) obtained. Results: The proportion of regular smokers was 34,79%, with significant differences between the prevalence of males: 39,08%, with women: 12,70%. There is also significantly related to the professional category, with 40,69% of smokers workers, the 34,37% of technicians, and 23,86% of managers. The intention among smokers to quit is 90,23%, which in the case of women reaches 100%. Conclusion: More than a third of clinic workers are regular users of snuff, most of them expressing their intention to quit. This habit is significantly higher among men than among women; likewise it is among the workers against management.
