Laburpena

Between 1934 and 1935, Spanish poets Manuel Altolaguirre and Concha Méndez published in London a review called 1616, with the aim of compiling the best English and Spanish poetry in ten stunning issues. Although 1616 bore the original subtitle “saw the death of W. S. & M. C. ”, which referred to the year in which William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes died, the writers were not included in any of the issues; however, contemporary authors such as Jorge de Montemayor, Sir Philip Sidney, Garcilaso de la Vega, William Drummond of Hawthornden and Lope de Vega can be found among its pages. This article focuses on Garcilaso’s sonnets and the reasons for choosing Drummond’s versions for the second issue of 1616, taking as a starting point Altolaguirre’s correspondence, his biography of Garcilaso (1933), and the lectures he gave in Britain.
