Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between types of conflict-task conflict and relationship conflict- and work group climate. 169 subjects of different service organizations were analyzed. Task conflict was measured through Jehn's (1995) scale, and relationship conflict by Cox's scale (1998, cfr., Friedman, Tidd, Currall y Tsai, 2000). Climate was assessed using FOCUS-93 questionnaire (van Muijen et al., 1999). Results show that (a) relationship conflict hampered work group climate, while task conflict increased innovation and goal climate; (b) worker's satisfaction increases if a high task conflict is combined with a high goal climate in teams. Results suggest that constructive controversy might be productive in a climate where compatible goals and contingent rewards exist in teams. Practical implications for improving conflict management in service organizations are suggested.
