Abstract

Emily Bronte was one of the pioneers of the Victorian era in defending the struggle for women’s rights and broke the rules of Victorian decorum. Through her female characters Brontë claims the independence of women, in a patriarchal society in which the husband had custody of the children and the wife had no social, legal or economic protection
