Abstract
The economic assessment of environmental goods and services constitutes an important contribution of economics in the incorporation of environmental issues into their theoretical founding, where their conceptualization about the economic value shows the viability of economic perception associated to the decision making process in natural areas. The objective of this paper consists of demonstrating the role of economic assessment of environmental goods and services against the present environmental situation, and their contribution to the decision making process, supported on criteria given by authors. In this regard, we present some general considerations about the relationship between economic science and environment, the need for environmental economic assessment processes, their definition of economic value and finally summarizes some of the economic assessment methods that incorporate environmental functions to economic analysis, which represents a theoretical and methodological contribution in the absence of real markets for the economic assessment of environmental goods and services.
