Resumen

Acorn production and its relationship with environmental variables has been studied in the woodlands and park grasslands (dehesas) of SW Spain. Nine representative stands were selected, five in Sierra and four in the Sierra de Cádiz, where acorn production was estimated along eight years (1991-1998). The results showed that mean annual acorn production oscillated between 11.6 and 285.8 g dry weight m: of the área covered by the trees. Acorn production was not related with rainfall, soil fertility or under-storey biomass, but it was significantly correlated with tree density. The annual acorn production varied strongly between years in all the plots, oscillating between 68 and 176% of the mean. The interannual variability in acorn production on the woodlands and the dehesas studied was comparable to those reported in the literature. The among-plant synchrony within stands was low. This fact allows to reduce the interannual variability of the acorn production in the stand.
