Abstract

The aging of the population is a phenomenon that is already con trasted in the most developed countries. The increase in life expectancy together with the low birth rate, cause several consequences in the wel fare system. This chapter will analyse the demographic projections for Spain and its Autonomous Communities of the main demographic in dicators, where it will be possible to see how the problem of population aging, far from stagnating, shows signs of continuing to increase over the years. Among the consequences of this aging problem, are those that directly affect the welfare state, where policy makers have taken sides to provide a possible solution to the problem, designing policies and proposing ideas that seek to improve the situation.
