Resumen

The purpose of the present study was to assess the degree of exertion during: i) the weekly training and ii) competitive matches for professional soccer players, relative to their playing positions, using the rate of perceived exertion (RPE6-20)’. A total of 18 professional soccer players playing in Liga 2 in Romania (2nd League) were assessed. For the weekly load, we analysed weeks with 6 days between official matches in which the RPE6-20 and total match duration (min) were obtained, in order to determine the global load on each player. The results showed that central defenders and forwards reported a greater perceived physical demand than the other teammates in both training sessions and matches. In view of the results, we could conclude that the RPE6-20 enables differentiation between the physical demands associated with the various playing positions in both matches and training. Given its validity, reliability, ease of use and low cost, the assessment could be very useful for coaches as a monitoring tool, for both strength and conditioning training.
