Abstract

This article examines the peculiarities of violence in Peru through the analysis of the experience of the guerrilla movement Shining Path. The article is divided in three parts: In the first one the eighties violence is presented in a perspective that makes it comprehensible. In the second one the rising and falling of Shining Path is described. In the third one, as a conclusion, the current political alternatives and the place of armed subversion in Peru are explored.
