Since the end of the last decade, universities have been considered as critical institutional actors in the national innovation system and are in the forefront of the European policy agenda. However, there is a lack of consensus about how these organisations should adapt to the new challenges of the knowledge-based economy. In this scenario, a new controversial concept has appeared: .managerial universities.. Within the paradigm of the new manageralism, this paper proposes a set of characteristics to better conceptualise what a managerial university is and analyses the rationale of implementing a managerial tool traditionally used by private companies - Intellectual Capital models - in our Higher Education (HE) institutions.
