Resumo

This paper analyzes the transition of the American colonial societies to the independent republics of the XIX century. We based on the study of one of the most powerful Spa nish merchants in River Plate: Diego de Agüero. Located in Buenos Aires. Agüero was consignee of the Cadiz merchant houses and leader of the monopolist group. Considering his activities in Montevideo port (in concordance with ship registration and with his correspondence). We conclude that the independence revolutions impacted differently on Río de la Plata commercial sector. According to Agüero case. We state that the most important monopolist merchants have not "become" in a landowner class. and have not "adapted" to the new system. In fact, they were defeat- ed in their attempt to hold the Spanish domain in America.
