Zusammenfassung

The salt lakes of la Hoya and Peña de Arpada: Alcalá de los Gazules The exploitation of Peña Arpada constitutes a strategic point within the region situated between la Campiña and the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales in the province of Cádiz. This crag is located in Alcalá de los Gazules, very close to regional road 5092, which connects this locality to Paterna de la Rivera. The Cañada Real Mantiagana (an ancient livestock trail) passes through its base, this leads to the thermal baths and castle of Gigonza (old Roman city of Saguntia). Its geological formation is composed of Triassic gypsiferous clay from which salt water emerges. In addition to these formations are documented volcanic ophitic rocks, which were used for the making of maces and mortars in antiquity. The summit of the crag is composed of a large vertical fold of Jurassic limestone and dolomites. This work is a contribution to the study of inland salt lakes, using field studies and documentation from different archives.
