The following article is divided into three parts. The first one is dedicated to the knowledge Athenians had of their own coinage during 5th and 4th century BC. The second one tries to explain the two different coin types present in the 6th century Athens, the Wappenmünzen and the Athena’s owl tetradrachm, as well as the numismatic tradition that has studied them. Finally, the third part ponders about the coinage and the tyranny of the Peisistratids, mines possession by Peisistratus and money employ as a way of political legitimation.
